Makenna Hovey has joined the Des Moines Public Library Foundation as a communications intern. She will work part-time this summer and continue her part-time internship through fall semester. We asked Makenna a few questions to get to know her:
Tell us a bit about yourself and what drew you to this role?
I am a junior at Drake University on the pre-law path studying Law, Politics & Society, and Strategic Political Communications, and I am currently involved in the Honors program and Mock Trial. I am originally from Minnesota.
As for this role, I have always been a big proponent of public libraries and the ability to have access to knowledge. I thought this role would be the perfect fit for my skills, and also to provide support to this belief as well!
Which library services have you used, and which ones are you interested in exploring?
Growing up, I loved to check movies out from my public library, and I still enjoy that ability. I also thoroughly use my hometown public library’s study rooms for weekend homework if I am visiting home.
A service provided by Des Moines Public Library that I want to learn more about is the Library of Things. I have always liked looking at little trinket libraries, so I feel like the Library of Things would be the same, but on a much bigger scale!
Tell us a little about your love for books.
I grew up going to my hometown public library every week with my grandmother on summer weekdays (and occasionally Saturdays if we went to the farmer’s market!). Having a very book-filled childhood has allowed me to find joy in reading up into my early adult life.
As I have gotten older, I try to read in my free time for enjoyment, between long required class readings. I have also taken a few English classes for fun and found one of my recent favorite reads, Klara and the Sun by Kazou Ishiguro, through a British Literature course.
What is your go-to coffee order?
An iced maple latte (with the real maple syrup!)
